Louie Bretaña is back with his fabulous paintings of indigenous Filipino cultures, covered with glitter and glass crystals.
The balete tree or strangler figs is a ficus plant that entraps and overgrows a host tree, eventually growing hollow where animals live. In an animist culture, they are seen as resident ancestral spirits and protectors of the area that were sadly demonised by colonial religion as malevolent and evil. This painting reaffirms and recognises their positive role as protectors and reminders of our responsibilities to our environment. The exhibition also features his black butterflies, spirits of the love ones and ancestors, also covered in glitter and glass crystals.
